Composition
- Each 5 ml suspension contains:200 mg Benzoyl Metronidazole (equivalent to 125 mg metronidazole).
- Each tablet contains: 250 mg Metronidazole.
Properties
The active principle of Amrizole is metronidazole which has strong antiprotozoal and bactericidal actions (against anaerobic infections involving septicaemia, necrotising pneumonia, puerperal sepsis, pelvic abscesses, cellulitis and postoperative wound infections).
It is effective against Trichomonas vaginalis and protozoa including Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia.
Indications
- Amerizole is used in the treatment of trichomoniasis of the genito-urinary tract in males and females.
- In amoebiasis, Amrizole is effective at all sites of infection and is used in the treatment of dysentery and amoebic abscesses as well as for the eradication of E histolytica from patients passing cysts.
- For prevention and treatment of anaerobic infections in patients undergoing abdorninal and gynaecological surgery.
- For treatment of giardiasis and Vincent’s infection.
Dosage
Treatment of acute amoebic dysentery, chronic intestinal amoebiasis, hepatic and other extra-intestinal amoebiasis
- Adults: 1 to 2 tablets three times daily for 5 to 10 days.
- Children (5 — 12 years): ½ to 1 tablet three times daily 5 to 10 days.
- Adults: 2 to 4 teaspoonfuls three times daily for 5 to 10 days.
- Children ( up to 3 years ): ½ to 1 teaspoonful three times daily for 5 to 10 days.
- Children (3 to 7 years): ¾ to 1 1⁄2 teaspoonful three times daily for 5 to 10 days.
- Children (7 to 10 years): 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls three times daily for 5 to 10 days.
Treatment of trichomoniasis
- One tablet three times daily for 7 days. A second course of treatment may be given, if needed , after an interval of 4 to 6 weeks. The concomitant treatment of sexual consorts is recommended.
- Adults and children over 10 years: 2 teaspoonfuls three times daily for 7 days. A second course of treatment may be given, if needed, after an interval of 4 to 6 weeks. The concomitant treatment of sexual cmsorts is recommended.
- Children ( up to 3 years ): 1 ¼ teaspoonful daily for 7 days.
- Children (3 to 7 years): 1 1⁄2 teaspoonfuls daily for 7 days.
- Children (7 to 10 years): 2 ½ teaspoonfuls daily for 7 days.
Treatment of giardiasis (lambliasis)
- One tablet three times daily for 10 days.
- Adults: 2 to 4 teaspoonfuls three times daily for 10 days.
- Children: proportional, as for amoebiasis.
For prevention and treatment of anaerobic infections
- 1 to 2 tablets three times daily for 7 days.
- 2 to 4 teaspoonfuls three times daily for 7 days.
Side effects
Amrizole is usually well tolerated. But flatulence and mild gastric upset may occur in hypersensitive individuals.
Contra — indications
Metronidazole should not be used in patients with blood dyscrasias or with active disease of the central nervous system. It is advisable to avoid its use during pregnancy.
Drug Interactions
Some patients may develop abdominal distress, vorniting, flushing or headache if they drink alcoholic beverages during a course of treatment.
